Bird Island Trail (Point Lobos State Park)

Since my dad was visiting last week, we went back to Point Lobos to attempt the Bird Island Trail again. A few weeks ago I went with just the girls but we turned around because I felt unsafe. It was much better this time with Eliza in the kid carrier backpack and one adult each for Charlotte and Ana.

It was a little stormy and the water was rough. It made for some amazing ocean music. Love the sound of crashing waves.

China Cove. Beautiful.

After the more treacherous parts, it was a nice easy walk.

Gorgeous!

After our hike, we took a quick drive down Palo Colorado Road to look at all the cool homes built in the forest. It really is like an enchanted forest. Especially since it had just rained and everything was cool and damp.

There are some good sized homes but this is my favorite. I think if I had to live alone, it would be awesome to live in a tiny little house in the forest.

This is hike #94 from my Monterey Hikes list.

Hiking distance: 0.8 mile
Configuration: out-and-back with small loop
Elevation gain: 20 feet
Difficulty: easy (but need an adult for each kid up thru 3yo)
Exposure: open coastal bluffs
Hiking buddies: the girls and grandpa
Would you do it again? yes
Best for… adults and older kids

  1. I remember this place, better photos or better weather? Beautiful place and I want to live in that cabin in the forest. HEAVEN on Earth.

  2. I love walking through the forest right after it rains because it makes it feel more enchanted…and that house looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale!
